A4e's owner, Emma Harrison, has been given a CBE in the New Year honours list. It's "For services to Unemployed People and to the Voluntary Sector." The Derby Telegraph expands on this a little. Emma Harrison has a new fan - James Caan of Dragons' Den fame. In a piece in the Telegraph he says: "Recently, I was impressed to read about Emma Harrison - founder and chairman of A4e, the largest supplier of Government training contracts. The company works with public sector organisations to help train people and get them back into work. The last government's Flexible New Deal scheme targeted people who have been on jobseeker's

Guardian interview with Emma
The Guardian today carries an article based on an interview with A4e's Emma Harrison; you can also read it on the UTV website. Written by Amelia Gentleman, it starts out as a disconcerting piece of PR for FND, as Emma is being interviewed in a mocked-up FND office (it doesn't say where) that A4e have been using to train new advisers. ' Emma Harrison, A4e's founder and chair, bubbles with enthusiasm for the new approach, which she

Women Awards and heard Emma Harrison speak. "Now, Emma," she writes,"is clearly an amazing lady – a sort of cross between a female Lord Sugar and Sheffield’s answer to Mother Theresa – and no doubt the most phenomenal success story. Her talk was natural, fascinating and funny." But she was less than impressed with her speech. Emma was dismissive of people whose lack of self-confidence stops them doing something; and of those who don't have a mentor and are therefore

Emma Harrison was a young graduate, suddenly landed with a company to run, and an absent father who was busy draining it of money. In 1991 Emma renamed the outfit Action for Employment (quickly abbreviated) and set about making money. She remains almost the sole owner. The breakthrough came with the

Emma Harrison represents a lot of what is wrong with this society. Money-sucking, dishonest people who unsuccessfully try to cover up their true natures with cliches and lip service. In her 'blog' on the A4E site, Emma minimises those who don't 'fit' in with the A4E program, pointing instead to the many who 'take all the help we have to offer and end up with jobs' (to paraphrase). The implication is clear: Emma and her minions are always

medical areas. In 2006 Emma Harrison made it "part of the A4e group of companies" and extended the sort of training Medex provided, focussing on the care industry. Presumably it was a good fit with New Deal, enabling A4e to put clients through short courses relatively cheaply. And it's an even better fit with FND, if the deal with Tomlinson is anything to go by. The article doesn't say whether the new staff are coming from the FND client list, but it would make sense.

This information is on the public record at Companies House. The majority of their contracts have deliverables and failure must in due course result in less business. I am not stating that this means that all they do is fine, however it compares favourable to the waste and lack of accountability of the civil service.

going for them and I rate Emma Harrison and Mark Lovell.I don't want to be an apologist for the private sector. However it tries to respond efficiently to its customer's requirements. I believe that many of the failed private sector delivered programmes are a result of poorly thought through specifications and procurement processes. All too often the private sector is the convenient whipping boy for those who think that society is unfair.
